Arnica Oil Arnica oils are one of the best known herbal sports medicines, arnica has dramatic results if used immediately after an injury. Arnica helps speed the healing process by moving waste-bound fluids out and moving cleansing fluids and platelets into the affected area. The anti-inflamatory properties of arnica are primarily due to its sesquiterpene lactones. These chemicals cause a reduction of inflammation by blocking the actions of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Arnica is a great addition to your first aid kit, however it’s use is limited to short durations because of allergic skin reactions when overused.
Menthol when applied to the skin and can act as a mild anesthetic. The cooling sensation produced by this compound, along with its anesthetic and counterirritant properties, has led to its use in products intended to relieve skin irritation, sore throat, or nasal congestion. It may be used to treat sunburn, fever, or muscle aches as well. Most products used to relieve these conditions contain only small amounts of the compound. Pure crystals, however, can be used with warm water to relieve cold symptoms through the release of vapor.
Camphor : People use camphor topically to relieve pain and reduce itching. It has also been used to treat fungal infections of the toenail, warts, cold sores, hemorrhoids, and osteoarthritis. Camphor is used topically to increase local blood flow and as a “counterirritant,” which reduces pain and swelling. It is important not to apply camphor to broken skin, as it will cause irritation of the skin.
Witch hazel combined with arnica makes an excellent topical remedy for the treatment of traumatic bruises, bumps, and sprains to relieve pain and promote speedy healing.
